The True Meaning of Thanksgiving
Bruce Tinsley

Frequent guest and friend of SRL Chuck Missler offers this
spiritually refreshing lesson in history..
"Measured by the standards of
men of their time, were the humble of the earth. Measured by
later accomplishments, they were the mighty. In appearance weak
and persecuted they came -- rejected, despised -- an
insignificant band; in reality strong and independent, a mighty
host of whom the world was not worthy, destined to free
mankind." - Calvin Coolidge
Cold and sick, fighting snow and sleet, a
motley band of English men and women struggled through their
first winter in the New World. Fewer than 50 of the 110 pilgrims
and crew that had stepped off the Mayflower survived until
spring. On their own, the Pilgrims would have likely all
perished their first year on the coast of New England.
God had better plans for them.
In March of 1621, a
loincloth-covered native stepped out of the woods and said,
"Welcome" in clear English. Samoset, the chief of the Algonquins,
had learned English from the fishing ships that occasionally put
into the coast of Maine. A few days later he returned to the
little Pilgrim village with another English speaking native
named Tisquantum (aka "Squanto").
When the Pilgrims arrived
in late 1620, they settled on cleared land that belonged to
nobody. Squanto's entire tribe had been wiped out while he
was in England after having been taken as a slave in 1605.
After returning to his native homeland with Captain John Smith
in 1614 , Squanto was again kidnapped and taken to Spain, where
he was bought by local friars and introduced to Christianity.
When he returned home, he found his tribe gone and the land that
had belonged to them shunned by other tribes. He wandered until
he found the Wampanoags who lived about 50 miles to the
southwest.
And so, Squanto proved to be a literal
God-send for the Pilgrims. He stayed with them and taught them
how to stalk deer and catch eels and plant corn the Indian way.
He showed them how to refine maple syrup and to discern which
wild plants were edible and which were poisonous. He introduced
them to trapping beavers, the pelts of which were in high demand
in Europe. Without his help, few of the Pilgrims would have
survived.
By the autumn of 1621, the
Pilgrims were well-prepared for the coming winter and extremely
grateful to God, to the Wampanoags, and to Squanto. Governor
Bradford declared a day of public thanksgiving to be held in
October. They invited Massasoit, the Wapanoags' chief, to a
feast to celebrate their bounty. The Wapanoags taught the
Pilgrims the art of making popcorn and the Pilgrims introduced
the Indians to fruit pies.
The Pilgrims had additional days of
thanksgiving for God's provision during the next
years of difficulty and hunger, but we remember these days of
feasting and games and competitions in our Thanksgiving
celebrations. God had shown He cared for this little band of
persecuted Englishmen in search of religious and civil freedom.
There have been several days of
thanksgiving since the time of the Pilgrims.
1777: Samuel Adams made a
thanksgiving day proclamation that was adopted by all 13
states:
"It is therefore recommended...
to set apart Thursday the eighteenth day of December
next, for solemn Thanksgiving and praise, that with one
heart and one voice the good people may express the
grateful feelings of their hearts and consecrate
themselves to the service of their divine benefactor..."
October, 1789: President George
Washington proclaimed Thursday the Twenty-sixth day of
November to be a day of national thanksgiving to Almighty
God.
October, 1863:
President Abraham Lincoln announced that the last Thursday
of November would be dedicated "as a day of Thanksgiving and
Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the
Heavens."
Finally, an act of Congress in
1941 dedicated the fourth Thursday of November for the purpose
of thanking our Creator.
Even as our forefathers acknowledged the
provision and goodness of God, let us also make this national
holiday a very special time to thank Him for our own provision -
our families, our sustenance and, above all, our redemption in
His Son!

Strong Medicine

Have you caught the onslaught of commercials cranked out by the
pharmaceutical companies these days?
Personally I find this tidal wave of "Ask your doctor
about.."messages a bit disturbing.
I mean, do I really need to know about the Flying Nun's bone
density problems? Or the rugged guys on the fishing trip and
their challenges with "stopping and starting"?
Talk about too much information.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the side effects of these wonder
drugs sound worse than the condition they are trying to cure.
Personally, I would much rather take my chances with "restless
eyelid syndrome" than run the risk of hair loss, increased body
odor, paranoid delusions, uncontrollable gambling compulsions
and heightened possibility of catastrophic sensory nervous
system shut down.
Aside from that, no worries.
And one other thing - Who in the world is going to make an
appointment, wait six months and sit in a germ filled waiting
room for 45 minutes just to ask a doctor if new "Drool-o-plex"
is right for you?
But I digress.
Now try to imagine if one of these multibillion dollar corporate
monsters came up with a new therapy that studies show would
lower your general risk of death by 20%.
Do you think we might be interested in that kind of health
enhancer?
Believe it or not, it already exists. Without a prescription.
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 26 (HealthDay
News) -- Attending a weekly religious
service, regardless of your faith, may lower your risk of
death by 20 percent compared to people who don't attend
services, researchers are reporting.
"Religion is always a hot topic, but particularly now,
when people are perhaps in fear because of the recession and
the threat of terrorism, people are looking for stability,
and religion is something we find people reach out to for
that stability. And, we see some health benefits here," said
the study's lead author, Eliezer Schnall, a clinical
assistant professor of psychology at Yeshiva College at
Yeshiva
University in New York City.
"Maybe it's the sense of community, or the support, or
maybe people are less depressed when they join in religious
services," he said, adding that the researchers tried to
control the data to account for many of these factors, but
"we have not completely explained it all."
Results of the study were published in the current
issue of the journal
Psychology
and Health.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20081126/hl_hsn/religionmayhelpextendyourlife
As you can imagine, the results of this study have left
many experts puzzled.
Dr. Harold G. Koenig, founder and co-director of the
Center for
Spirituality, Theology and Health at
Duke
University Medical Center, called the new
research "a very well-done study that provides good,
well-controlled evidence that religious attendance is
related to lower mortality."
"And, they [the researchers] show it's not just the
social factor, it's not just the behavioral factors, and
it's not just that some people might be too sick to be able
to go to church. The researchers controlled well for these,
though they still don't explain it all at the end," said
Koenig.
"But," he added, "that doesn't mean there are
supernatural effects, just that we don't fully understand
the mechanism by which religion does this yet."
W hat could possibly explain this mysterious
phenomenon?
I'm sure some researcher will bag a big government grant
to evaluate the health benefits of the communion wafer on a
molecular level.
But the answer is fairly obvious.
Could it be that those who attend church regularly have a
better than average chance of actually coming to know God in
a personal way?
And when we come to know the true and living God, we
discover that His love is the answer to the aching emptiness
that resides deep in our souls.
And when we are made whole by His touch we no longer need
to turn to things that are less than God's love to meet that
crucial need.
And let's face it, some of those things we look to as
substitutes for God's peace can be hazardous to our health.
But that's the wonderful thing about knowing the love of
God.
God isn't simply interested in blessing us when we are in
church. He wants to touch every part of our lives with His
love.
Not just your church life, but your whole life.
Consider this amazing description of the personal and
practical impact of God's love king David describes.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender
mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the
eagle’s. (Psalm 103:2-5)
All those benefits - and not one nasty side effect!
God's love is strong medicine.

America's Vanishing Act

Earlier this week I caught a few moments of a National
Geographic Channel program on the alleged prophecies of
Nostradamus.
The so-called predictions of the future, couched in four line
poetic blocks called "Quatranes", are so vague and open to
interpretation he may as well have written, "Two nations will go
to war, but only one will win."
But what a contrast we see when we turn to the subject of Bible
prophecy.
The nations, conflicts, even personalities predicted are so
specific they are almost impossible to miss.
This raises a key question.
When the Bible describes the Last Days, we see Israel, Iran,
Libya, Russia and a revived Roman Empire clearly on the scene.
The United States?
No where to be found.
So what will happen to our nation as the time of Jesus' return
draws near?
The headline on today's edition of the incredibly popular on
line news summary site, the Drudge Report offers one possible
theory.
RUSSIAN ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE AND BREAKUP OF USA
Tue Nov 25 2008 09:04:22 ET
A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic
turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view
that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into
separate parts.
Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected
daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured
by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an
avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By
1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2
trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid
that can only collapse."
Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts,
he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial
problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there
have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the
rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and
this means that whole cities will be left without work.
Governors are already insistently demanding money from the
federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it
is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama
can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there
are no miracles."
He also cited the "vulnerable political setup", "lack of unified
national laws", and "divisions among the elite, which have
become clear in these crisis conditions."
He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six parts - the
Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South,
with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on
the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate
mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large
Native American populations; and the northern states, where the
influence from Canada is strong.
He even suggested that "we could claim Alaska - it was only
granted on lease, after all." Panarin, 60, is a professor at the
Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
and has authored several books on information warfare.
Developing...
http://www.drudgereport.com/flashrur.htm
So who will step into the breach created by this anticipated
American collapse?
Panarin suggests that China and Russia are likely candidates.
The Bible makes it clear in passages like Daniel chapter 7 that
revived Rome, under the supernaturally energized leadership of
the Antichrist will dominate the world in the time known in
Scripture as the Tribulation.
So will America go out, not with a bang, but a wimper?
I think this picture of a deteriorating and eventually
fracturing U.S. is wishful thinking by America's enemies.
What will cause the United States to become a bit player on the
world scene?
I believe it will be the prophetic event described in I
Thessalonians 4:16-17.
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with
the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the
dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and
remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to
meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the
Lord.
Prior to the start of the seven year period of Hell on earth,
God will snatch out His own people before the storm of His wrath
breaks on planet Earth.
All who are genuine, born again Christians will vanish in a
twinkling of an eye.
Now, which major player nation would be most effected by such an
event?
Surveys estimate there are between 30-50 million believers in
Christ in the United States.
Imagine the impact of this event economically, socially,
governmentally, even militarily.
The rapture would leave our nation a broken shell of its former
self.
Europe? China? Russia? Israel? Iran?
Not so much.
Foreign affairs experts like Igor Panarin are right in the sense
that a new world order is coming soon.
The reason the United states will seem to vanish from the scene
may come from a higher Source than the secular world can even
imagine.
For you
yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a
thief in the night. For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then
sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a
pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren,
are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a
thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are
not of the night nor of darkness.
Therefore let
us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For
those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are
drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting
on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope
of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to
obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for
us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with
Him. (I Thessalonians 5:2-10)

Little Green Morality
Have we met? A survey has found more
people believe in supernatural activity than God
The provocative headline in today's London Daily Mail is
certainly eye catching.
Believe in God? Oh, no. But I swear by little green men,
ghosts and mediums
Believing in ghosts and little green men from outer space
appears a touch easier than having faith in God, according to a
survey.
The researchers found that while 54 per cent of us are
convinced the Almighty exists, 58 per cent believe in the
supernatural.
Nearly a quarter of the 3,000 surveyed claimed they had
had a paranormal encounter.
Some 37 per cent said aliens and ghosts were the basis of
their belief system.
Earlier this year reports released by the National
Archives detailed UFO sightings logged by the UK Government.
These included a fisherman who described being taken on to a
spacecraft - only to be rejected because of his age.
Another survey last year highlighted concern over
declining moral standards - attributed chiefly to a retreat in
religious beliefs.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1088824/Believe-God-Oh-But-I-swear-little-green-men-ghosts-mediums.html?ITO=1490
While we are out in the great beyond, today's news also
features a story about an outbreak of Big Foot sightings in
British Columbia.
Three more Bigfoot sightings reported
Secondhand accounts of three
sasquatch sightings in Moricetown has prompted UFO researcher
Brian Vike to conduct an investigation.
Vike, Director of HBCC UFO research is still trying to
verify three sasquatch sightings in Moricetown.
“Since I got the initial call, I’ve had no other
information,” Vike said. “ As near as I can tell, the sightings
all happened after the end of September but I have called and
called but no one is calling me back.”
The lady who called on the morning of Halloween, told
Vike that there had been a rash of sightings on the native
reserve. Unfortunately without talking to someone who could give
a first-person account, Vike said the information is hearsay at
best.
Vike got the details from the first account from the
woman’s mother.
“Allegedly, she was walking out to the mailbox and this
thing walked in front of her,” Vike said. “But I called and
called and got nowhere so I am thinking this is a little fishy.”
Another women apparently told friends that she had seen a
sasquatch peeking in someone’s window.
http://www.bclocalnews.com/news/Three_more_Bigfoot_sightings_reported.html
If anything, the results of the Daily Mail poll are probably
understated.
I get the feeling that there are probably more people who
believe in things that go bump in the night, but probably won't
admit it out loud.
How interesting that in a culture that prides itself on
scientific advancement, faith in mediums, spiritists, little
green or gray men thrives.
And whatever you do, don't go messin' with Sasquatch.
G.K. Chesterton has been credited with this astute
observation - "When a man ceases to believe in God, he doesn't
believe in nothing. He believes in anything."
And the Bible does make it clear that an anything goes style
of spirituality will become dominant in the Last Days.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound
doctrine, but according to their own desires, because
they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves
teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the
truth, and be turned aside to fables. (II Timothy 4:3-4)
But why do you suppose the little green men are doing so
well, and belief in God seems to be on the decline?
A fascinating insight comes from the key phrase "according to
their own desires".
Space monkeys, Big Foot and Madame Lasagne on the Psychic
Buddies Telephone Tea reading service all have one thing in
common.
None of them will ever tell you your life is heading in the
wrong direction.
But the message, "Don't go changin' to try and please me"
isn't to be found in the Bible.
Jesus hit the nail on the head when He bluntly related this
truth to those who despised Him.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me
because I testify of it that its works are evil. (John 7:7)
Most people aren't really in the mood for a word of
correction, or a sense of conviction about the pain they have
caused in this life.
But the spiritual vacuum that exists in the heart of every
human being still remains.
Will we fill it with God's truth?
Or just keep messin' with Sasquatch?

Can You Dig It?

One of the most fascinating interactions between Jesus and His
critics took place when the Lord came into Jerusalem in the
event called the "Triumphal Entry".
And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of
Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice
and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they
had seen, saying:
“‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the
LORD!’
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd,
“Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these
should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” (Luke
19:36-40)
Jesus' statement that even rocks would bear witness of His truth
was far more than just emotion generated hype.
Jesus knew this very day was predicted with remarkable precision
in both the book of Daniel and the Psalms.
But if you don't mind the play on words, the stones have been
crying out about the authenticity and reliability of Jesus'
message ever since.
A classic example of this was reported this week by the Reuters
news service.
Israeli archaeologists unearth Herod family tombs
By Allyn Fisher-Ilan
BEIT SAHOUR, West Bank (Reuters) -
An Israeli archaeologist said on Wednesday he had unearthed what
he believed were the 2,000-year-old remains of two tombs which
had held a wife and daughter-in-law of the biblical King Herod.
Other findings announced by Ehud Netzer of Jerusalem's Hebrew
University provided new evidence of the lavish lifestyle of the
Roman-era monarch also known as the "King of the Jews."
Herod, a Roman-anointed king who ruled Judea from 37 BC
until his death in 4 BC, has a special place in biblical
history. Herod rebuilt the Jewish temple in Jerusalem, making
him a focus of study in the Jewish state.
The Gospel of Matthew says Herod ordered the "Massacre of
the Innocents," the killing of male infants in Jesus' birthplace
of Bethlehem, out of fear of losing his throne.
Netzer, an authority on Herodian excavations, showed
reporters portions of two limestone sarcophagi he says had
contained remains of one of Herod's wives, Malthace, and a
daughter-in-law.
He said these findings supported his claims that another
sarcophagus he found at the site in 2007 had been Herod's tomb.
Some experts had said then the evidence seemed inconclusive.
Based on the additional sacrophagi he has found, and
despite the absence of any inscriptions or documentation by the
ancient Jewish historian Josephus Flavius, Netzer said:
"I would eat my hat if it were someone else's tomb."
At a visit to the dig site in Herodium, outside Jerusalem
in the occupied West Bank, where one of Herod's palaces once
stood, Netzer showed reporters evidence of what he said was a
mausoleum at the site, where the remains of the sacrophagi had
been found.
Some bones were also found nearby but Netzer could not
verify they belonged to any of the Herod dynasty.
Netzer said the remains of the monarch and his relatives
likely disappeared when their tombs were smashed, possibly by
Jewish rebels against the Romans from 66 to 72 AD.
He said his team was surprised when they came across
further evidence of Herod's cushy lifestyle, a well-preserved
mural of gazelles decorating walls of what Netzer believes was
luxury seating for a theater.
http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSTRE4AI7S920081119
As we have noted in this space contrary to popular belief,
the Bible doesn't begin the account of the life of Jesus with
the words, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.."
It's message is set in the hard core reality of human
history. The events it describes can be verified or falsified by
the facts on the ground.
In fact, the opulence of Herod's Tomb is very much in keeping
with the Biblical record of the life of a king with all the
muscle of Rome behind him.
The fact that his sarcophagus was smashed by by angry Jewish
rebels confirms the account of a man so cruel he would slaughter
toddlers and infants to protect his hold on power.
Why does the Bible sew such verifiable evidences into the
fabric of an essentially spiritual message?
Jesus put it this way -
If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how
will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? (John 3:12)
God has graciously given us these secular check points, these
things we can see, to build our confidence in His message
concerning the things we can't.
That is why the stones, like those in Herod's tomb, still cry
out.

Well, no. I don't really look like that.
I am definitely "folic-ally challenged" in comparison to that
flowing mane.
I tend to button up my shirts.
And my name is not Frampton.
But we do have the "Alive" thing in common!
That's right, we will be taking the Scott Richards Live program
out of the studio to answer questions from a live audience.
Tonight we will be doing a Scott Richards Live-Alive! event at
Calvary Chapel of Tucson.
And you can join in for a live video feed of the get together.
Just log on to

Standard Time.
Please pray that the Lord uses this time to not just deal with
questions from the mind, but also from the heart!
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper
than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul
and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.

Change We Can't Believe In

Have you ever had the urge to make a major change in your life?
I will never forget getting into a conversation with a woman who
was cutting my hair.
She went on and on about how tough her life and circumstances
were.
If it wasn't for bad luck, she'd have no luck at all.
But then, her eyes brightened.
She said, "But I have friends who live in Fontana, California. I
hear it is beautiful! If I could just move to Fontana, all my
dreams will come true."
Now, I have learned never to dispute the opinion of someone who
is standing over you with a sharp implement in their hand. So I
merely smiled and nodded.
Unfortunately for my stylist I knew two things that she didn't.
First, Fontana is strategically situated so that all of the smog
produced in the entire L.A. basin eventually goes there to die.
It's most notable features are the picturesque slag heaps from
the Fontana steel plant that catch the eyes of all driving by on
I-10.
Second, I have discovered that as much as we think moving to a
new place can give us a brand new start in life, it all too
often just doesn't work out that way.
Oh, we meet new people, see new things, have a new address or a
new place to go to work in the morning. But there is one
unavoidably old thing in the picture.
Us.
No matter where we go in this life, we haul along with us the
same faults, flaws, character quirks and blind spots that
conspired together to make our current address unlivable.
And sooner or later we recreate the very same life situation we
changed jobs, or zip codes, or churches, or even marriage
partners to avoid.
We live in a time where people are hungry for change and
thirsting for the hope that tomorrow might be a better day.
And here is a news flash - the change we really need, the change
we can really believe in can't be found by electing new leaders
or getting a well placed shot of Bo-tox.
The change we really need - is a brand new us.
With a brand new heart that doesn't have to be a slave to the
past, to guilt, addictive behavior or our own personal
stubbornness.
That is why Jesus told us:
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born
again.’ (John 3:7)
For those who come to Jesus and ask Him not to bless our mess,
but to change our lives, the Bible makes this remarkable
promise:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things
have become new. (II Corinthians 5:17)
When you become a new creation, you quickly discover it doesn't
matter where you live your life as much as it matters that you
know the Author of life.
And with the love, truth and personal touch of Jesus to
experience daily, real change is not only possible, but
beautiful.
Even in Fontana!

Let's Get Literal

"You don't interpret the Bible literally, do you?"
If I had a dime for every time I have heard that question I'd be
a wealthy man.
And it's not so much the question that I find interesting, as
much as the facial expression that usually goes with it.
It's the same one you could expect if you opened a conversation
by saying, "Yeah, I spent last weekend teasing Sasquatch with
beef jerky treats!"
The conversation gets even more interesting when I up the ante
by replying, "Since the Bible is a work of literature how else
would I interpret it but literally?"
At that point the questioner will sputter, "You know what I
mean. You don't believe that Genesis is like history? That there
was an actual Noah? You don't actually buy that story of Jonah
and the fish, do you?"
To which I will usually say, "Jesus considered Noah a historical
figure."
But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of
the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they
were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until
the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the
flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of
the Son of Man be. (Matthew
24:37-39)
He also considered the story of Jonah to be so literally true
and factual He used it as a guarantee of His own resurrection.
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying,
“Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous
generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it
except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three
days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will
the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of
the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with
this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the
preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is
here. (Matthew 12:39-41)
Which raises an inevitable question.
If Jesus considered Noah and his flood experience to be a
literal, historical event.
And if Jesus considered Jonah and the great fish to be a
literal, historical event.
Shouldn't we defer to His take on the matter?
The real question is, "Do you consider Jesus a reliable source
of insight into the Bible?"
Someone Who has the impressive credentials of a sinless life,
power over nature and a literal, historical resurrection from
the dead deserves to be taken seriously on spiritual issues.
Personally, I think it wise to make His takes on the Bible, our
takes on the Bible.
It's a funny thing, but much like in counseling we discover that
there is always the presenting question, and running underneath,
the real question.
When someone asks, "Do you take the Bible literally?"the deeper
issue really is this:

For Goodness Sake?
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
The inflatable Frosty the Snow Man displays are popping up in
front yards.
The occasional Christmas carol is being worked into elevator
music.
Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Bonanza-thon Sales Blow Outs are being
staged at the mall.
And, of course, the godless set is already offended.
To whit-
'Why Believe in a God?' Ad Campaign Launches on
D.C. Buses

WASHINGTON, D.C. —
You better watch out. There is a new combatant in the Christmas
wars.
Ads proclaiming, "Why believe in a god? Just be good for
goodness' sake," will appear on Washington, D.C., buses starting
next week and running through December. The American Humanist
Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign
Tuesday.
In lifting lyrics from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town,"
the Washington-based group is wading into what has become a
perennial debate over commercialism, religion in the public
square and the meaning of Christmas.
"We are trying to reach our audience, and sometimes in
order to reach an audience, everybody has to hear you," said
Fred Edwords, spokesman for the humanist group. "Our reason for
doing it during the holidays is there are an awful lot of
agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a
little alone during the holidays because of its association with
traditional religion."
To that end, the ads and posters will include a link to a
Web site that will seek to connect and organize like-minded
thinkers in the D.C. area, Edwords said.
Edwords said the purpose isn't to argue that God
doesn't exist or change minds about a deity, although "we
are trying to plant a seed of rational thought and critical
thinking and questioning in people's minds."
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,450445,00.html
"Rational thought and critical thinking", eh?
Let's examine this ad campaign by its' own standard
for a moment.
The first question that runs through my mind is pretty basic
- What does the American Humanist Association mean by the word
"good"?
No doubt, they take the general societal consensus that
defines being "good" as having compassion and consideration for
others, particularly those who are strangers, physically hurting
or generally on the losing end of things.
But what if my culture says that being "good" is helping
humanity perfect itself by culling out such "human weeds"?
What if my perspective states that the sick and the slow
should not be allowed to survive and pass their inferior genes
on to another generation who will only suffer the same fate.
What if I believe, for the greater evolutionary good, all
welfare, social assistance and health care should be denied
those who simply fail to measure up to a pre-determined genetic
standard. In fact, unless certain individuals meet that standard
they should not even be considered human beings.
I'd be in some pretty impressive company if I held those
views.
Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood believed
the first statement.
http://www.spectator.org/archives/2004/06/23/maggie-sanger-and-the-human-we
Nobel Prize nominee Herbert Spencer believed the second.
http://www.iep.utm.edu/s/spencer.htm
Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of DNA held to the third.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3798/is_/ai_n9036015
The ultimate questions the American Humanist Association
raises with their amazingly superficial ad campaign is simple -
Whose definition of good are you using? And why should I listen
to you?
The main problem we run into when we remove God from a
discussion of morality is this:
If there is no God, we are simply an accident. A nice roll of
some chemical dice.
If we are an accident, there is no ultimate purpose to our
lives beyond following our drives for survival and reproduction.
Morality is simply a social convention. It is enforced by the
consensus and will of the controlling leaders of the
majority of humanity.
And if morality is merely a power game, the only difference
between Hitler and us, is that he lost a war.
To answer the question on that cheery holiday billboard - why
believe in God?
Because "goodness for goodness sake" is both incomprehensible
and irrational without Him.
A far more consistent ethic is rooted in the truth that our
inherent desire to "be good" is a reflection of the fact that we
are made in the image and likeness of the Author of goodness.
As a fairly intelligent man named Solomon concluded at the
end of his life -
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

When the Lord Looks At You

"You're not that
good, so smile a lot when you come on!" his first repertory
theater manager told him. His first wife, who was a professional
ice skater, was no less encouraging: "You'll never be an actor,
your face is too weak, your jaw is too big and your mouth's too
small."
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20081111/122643635200.html
If my first stab at an acting career was met with those
encouraging words, I might look into making big money in my
spare time as a "key grip" or a "best boy".
But apparently Roger Moore was cut out of a different cloth.
He not only made a living as an actor, but actually achieved
icon status and even knighthood for his run as James Bond.
Have you ever noticed how consistently those who have become a
real success recount a story or two where so called experts or
even people close to them bluntly told them they would never
amount to anything?
My parents told me that my first grade teacher, a stout German
woman with a stare that could melt lead, compassionately shared
with them that I was "borderline retarded" and "just didn't have
what it takes to succeed academically".
I thank the Lord that my Mom and Dad didn't listen to her.
They saw better things in me.
And I thank the Lord that I didn't listen to her either.
One of the saddest things I have seen in this world is when
people live down to the level of their detractors.
"They must know what they are talking about. They know a lot
more than I do. I'll never really amount to anything."
And another human being takes their place in the life of quiet
desperation lane.
That is what makes the message of Jesus so awe inspiring.
Jesus saw a woman his own disciples considered a bother and an
interruption and declared,
“O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you
desire.” (Matthew 15:28)
Jesus saw a man considered a crook, a traitor and sell out and
said,
“Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a
son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save
that which was lost.”(Luke 19:9-10)
What does God see when He looks at you?
The world might say you lack the essentials. But God says,
"And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all
principality and power." (Colossians 2:10)
The only question that remains is will we listen to the critics,
or Christ?

If You Are Free To Read This, Thank A Veteran

A few years ago I was invited to attend a Billy Graham
Organization conference in Washington DC.
I have to admit, from the time I got off the plane I was
immediately struck with a raging case of slack jawed tourist-itis.
Seeing things I had only known from pictures in books or images
on television blew me away.
On one early morning run I saw -
The Washington Monument.
The Lincoln Memorial.
The Capitol Building.
The Smithsonian Institute.
The White House.
It was almost too much to take in.
But of all the amazing sights I saw on that trip, none left a
more lasting impact than the one captured in the image above -
The Vietnam War Memorial.
When you come up upon it, it looks like a semi submerged angular
piece of polished black granite. But as you draw nearer you see
the names listed of every soldier, sailor, airman and Marine who
made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation.
But you also see something else.
The family members, the loved ones, looking for the name of the
son, the father or the friend whose name is inscribed there.
Some were even wearing their old uniforms as they looked for the
names of those who made up their own "band of brothers".
I saw many people taking a blank sheet of paper, placing it over
the name and brush back and forth with a pencil so they could
take a copy of the name home with them.
As they did, total strangers would begin to cry on each others'
shoulders in the instant intimacy of a strange mixture of grief
and pride shared.
I felt it an honor to stand and see these names, permanently
etched on this eloquent expression of gratitude.
And when Veterans' day rolls around, I try to take a moment to
remember how I felt at the sight of the enormous number of names
and the enormity of their sacrifice.
If you are a veteran reading this today, may I say thank you for
your service.
If you are not a veteran, don't let this day pass without saying
thanks to at least one person who stood on that wall so we could
be free.
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay
down one’s life for his friends. (John 15:13)

Go With the Flow?

"Don't all religions teach basically the same thing."?
Talk about an idea whose time seems to have come.
That argument used to be the favorite of your friendly
neighborhood new ager.
But a report from the BBC tells us the notion that "all
religious rivers flow to the one great ocean which is God" has
definitely moved up in the world.
Pope urged to share common ground
|
By Robert Pigott
Religious Affairs
Correspondent
|
When 138 senior Muslim scholars and clergy tried to
establish the common ground between Islam and Christianity last
year, they said the very peace of the world hung on the outcome.
On Tuesday, a high-ranking delegation is beginning a rare
visit to Rome in an effort to persuade the Pope to endorse what
they say are the shared origins and values of the world's two
biggest religions.
Their letter, A Common Word, cited passages from the
Koran which the scholars said showed that Christianity and Islam
worship the same God, and require their respective followers to
show each other particular friendship.
The document examined fundamental doctrine and stressed
what it said were key similarities - such as the belief in one
God and the requirement for believers to "love their neighbours
as themselves".
Significantly the letter acknowledged that the Prophet
Muhammad was told only the same truths that had already been
revealed to Jewish and Christian prophets, including Jesus
himself.
After a year using the Islamic principle of seeking
consensus, the letter has developed into a "manifesto" and is
backed by almost 300 leaders from Sunni, Shi'ite, Sufi and other
Muslim traditions.
The initiative was welcomed promptly by several Christian
leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7706977.stm
Do Christians and Moslems worship the same God?
A quick visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem should answer
this question once and for all.
One of the most eye catching features of the area is the
famous Moslem shrine, the Dome of the Rock.
Consider the dedication statement found inside.
Inside the building in
classical Arabic is inscribed, "O you People of the Book,
overstep not bounds in your religion, and of God speak only the
truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is only an apostle
of God, and his Word which he conveyed unto Mary, and a Spirit
proceeding from him. Believe therefore in God and his
apostles, and say not Three. It will be better for you.
God is only one God. Far be it from his glory that he
should have a son."
http://www.bibleplaces.com/domeofrock.htm

So if all religions really teach the same thing you would think
they could agree on something as basic as say -
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have
everlasting life." (John 3:16)
Because all world religions disagree with one another on the
essential issues of the nature of God and what it means to
please Him, we slam head on into a basic principle of logic
called the law of non contradiction.
We can conclude that all religions can be wrong, but they can't
all be right because the truth claims of one contradict the
others.
So why believe that Christianity is correct and all others are
wrong?
The Apostle Paul dealt with that issue with stunning clarity.
Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to
think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone,
something shaped by art and man’s devising.
30 Truly, these
times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men
everywhere to repent, 31
because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world
in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given
assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts
17:29-31)
Christianity stands or falls on the historical fact of Jesus'
resurrection from the dead. This is a claim that can be verified
or falsified by examining the eye witness accounts.
It is the credibility of Jesus that not only separates
Christianity from Islam or any other religion, but also should
cause us to sit up and take notice when this same Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me." (John 14:6)
All religious rivers don't flow to the true and living God.
All but one will only lead us over a cliff.

the God revealed in the Bible and Allah of the Koran take a look

The Second Great Tragedy Begins?
There is an old saying that there are two great tragedies in
life - Not getting what you want, and getting it.
The confetti has hardly been cleaned up from the Hyde Park
celebration of Barak Obama's election victory, and already we
are seeing ominous signs that Joseph Biden's prediction of a
"manufactured world crisis that will test the mettle of the new
president" may be coming to pass.
Update - Moscow
Putin may return to Kremlin in '09: report
MOSCOW ( Reuters) –
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev could
resign from his post in 2009 to pave the way for
Vladimir Putin to return to the Kremlin,
Vedomosti
newspaper reported on Thursday, citing an unidentified source
close to the Kremlin.
Medvedev Wednesday proposed increasing the presidential
term to six years from four years, a step the newspaper said was
part of a plan drawn up by
Vladislav
Surkov, who serves as Medvedev's first
deputy chief of staff.
Under the plan, Medvedev could implement changes to the
constitution and unpopular
social reforms
"so that Putin could return to the Kremlin for a longer period,"
the newspaper said.
"Under this scenario Medvedev could resign early citing
changes to the constitution and then
presidential elections could take place in
2009," the newspaper said, citing the unidentified source close
to the Kremlin.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081106/wl_nm/us_russia_medvedev_putin
George W. Bush famously said that he "looked Putin in the eye
and saw someone he could deal with."
John McCain countered by saying that he "looked Putin in the
eye and saw the letters KGB."
But perhaps the most telling question is, when Vlad Putin
looks Barak Obama in the eye, what will he see?
Update - Jerusalem
4 Kassam rockets hit western Negev
The remnants of an exploded Qassam rocket that was
fired from the
Gaza Strip at
Israel.
Palestinians fired a Kassam
rocket from northern Gaza on Thursday afternoon as sporadic
shelling of
the Western Negev continued, following the
cross-border
special forces raid launched by the IDF on
Tuesday night.
Over 50 rockets have been fired at Israel since Tuesday,
when soldiers raided a structure 250 meters from the Kissufim
border crossing in Gazan territory, which housed the entrance to
a tunnel the army said was intended to enable Hamas to kidnap
IDF troops in the immediate future.
Early Thursday morning the air force fired on four armed
Islamic Jihad terrorists in the village of Tel al-Zatar, in
northern Gaza. The IDF said the attack was a pinpoint strike
aimed at a cell which had fired rockets into Israel. One man was
killed and four more were wounded in the strike, Palestinian
sources reported.

It seems that both sides in the Israel/Palestinian conflict
have been taking a wait and see approach to the results of the
election. What message has the result sent to the Middle East?
In his Flash Traffic blog, Joel Rosenberg reports this
reaction from Israel.
A senior political strategist in Israel emailed me last
night with this thought: "The State of Israel is now facing the
most unfriendly American administration ever….Israel's will to
live will be tested in ways that will not e pretty. Many of
Obama's foreign policy team and Middle East advisors see Israel
as the obstacle to peace. And we can not count on Jewish
supporters of Obama to have any standing in setting policy in
this administration." A new poll released yesterday also caught
my attention: 46% of Israelis would have voted for McCain, while
only 34% would have voted for Obama. That tells us something
about the concern from Eilat to Haifa and from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem about losing a great friend of Israel and the Jewish
people in President Bush to someone who has not indicated
convincing support for Israel in the past.
http://flashtrafficblog.wordpress.com/
How will the new administration respond to the challenge of
an increasingly aggressive Russia, a potential war in Israel
with Hamas, Hezbollah or even Iran?
It appears we will find out sooner rather than later.
What should students of Biblical prophecy look for in the
days ahead?
I Thessalonians 5 tells us to watch for crisis moments to
increase in a significant way as the time of the Lord's return
draws near.
For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden
destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant
woman. And they shall not escape. (I Thessalonians 5:3)
Crisis moments will increase in frequency and intensity.
So how do we respond?
Again Joel Rosenberg offers this on target advice.
I know many of you are very worried about the direction
of our country. I certainly understand this sentiment, but as I
wrote yesterday, let us not lose heart. The Lord knew who would
win. He allowed it to happen. He has a plan. He has a purpose.
And now He is calling us to serve Him faithfully — to do
whatever He tells us to do, to go wherever He tells us to go, to
say whatever He tells us to say. Now is the time to draw close
to Christ, to advance His kingdom, and prepare for His return.
He is, after all, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Now
is certainly no time to forget, or to be discouraged.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The results are in. The votes have been cast.
For the better part of a year the focus of not only the United
States, but the world has been rivetted on the presidential
election.
The verdict?
People have voted for change.
But the crucial question that has somehow gotten lost in all the
high sounding rhetoric and obsession over polls and focus groups
is simple - "Change to what?"
Interestingly, the Bible gives us a view of the people of Israel
in a very similar change hungry.
In I Kings 12, we see the transition from the reign of King
Solomon to his son Rehoboam.
Although Israel generally prospered under Solomon, the people
were also feeling chaffed by the exhorbitant amount of taxes
they paid to finance the kingdom.
So they asked Solomon's son to give them a break.
Rehoboam decided this was too big an issue to decide on the spur
of the moment, so he asked the people for three days time to
meet with his advisers.
The old guard told him, "Cut the peoples' taxes and you will win
their hearts. They will follow you forever!"
But Rehoboam also wanted to hear from his contemporaries -
the young bucks he had grown up with.
Their response?
"Are you kidding? If you go soft on the people now they will
never respect you. There will be no end to their whining! Tell
them, if you think my Dad was bad, you ain't seen nothin' yet. I
will tax you back to the stone age!"
So what did Rehoboam choose to do?
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day,
as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third
day.” Then the king answered the people roughly, and rejected
the advice which the elders had given him; and he spoke to them
according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father
made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father
chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with
scourges!” So the king did not listen to the people; for the
turn of events was from the LORD, that He might fulfill
His word, which the LORD had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to
Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them,
the people answered the king, saying:
“What share have we in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
To your tents, O Israel!
Now, see to your own house, O David!”
So Israel departed to their tents. But Rehoboam reigned over the
children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah. (I Kings
12:12-17)
A bad move?
No doubt.
And like a lot of us when we make bad moves, Rehoboam was under
the belief that the best way to make up for a boneheaded
decision is to do the very same thing, but harder next time.
Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of the
revenue; but all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died.
Therefore King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste to flee to
Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of
David to this day. (I Kings 12:18-19)
Just as first impressions are lasting impressions personally,
they can also be so politically.
We need to pray for our new president that he will listen to
wise counsel, shun foolish and pride based counsel, and have the
wisdom to know the difference.
The fate of an already divided nation could depend on it.
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet
and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For
this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our
Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth. (I Timothy 2:1-4)

The High Cost of Leadership

A few years ago Robert Redford starred in a movie called "The
Candidate".
The plot revolved around Bill McKay, the son of a famous, well
entrenched politician who was pressured to fulfill family and
party expectations by running for office.
Having a rebellious streak, McKay ran his campaign completely
against conventional wisdom with no intention of actually
winning.
But the more he ran against the grain, the more popular he
became until against all odds he won.
The final line of he spoke was haunting.
Turning to his campaign manager Bill McKay said, "Now what do we
do?"
I can't help but think that same question will be running
through the mind and heart of whoever emerges victorious in
today's presidential election.
Whoever takes office is going to immediately face some
overwhelming challenges. As friend of SRL Joel Rosenberg
commented on his blog today:
Whoever wins the American presidency today will face
enormous global challenges, particularly in the epicenter.
The Iranian nuclear threat. Russia's growing military alliance
with Iran. Osama bin Laden and the continuing al Qaeda threat.
The Hamas and Hezbollah threats. The volatility in nuclear-armed
Pakistan. The possibility of revolutions or coup attempts in
Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Libya's new pursuit of Russian
arms and nuclear technology. The list goes on and on. Given
their profound policy differences, how the U.S. deals with these
serious challenges will depend largely on whether Barack Obama
or John McCain takes the oath of office on January 20, 2009.
As for my family and me, while we have a strong preference for
who wins, we know the outcome of this election is in the hands
of the Lord. Two verses give us particular comfort today:
* Daniel 2:21 - "It is He [the God of heaven]…who
removes kings and establishes kings."
* Job 42:2 - "I know that You [the God of Israel] can do all
things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted."
It is the Lord God who will ultimately decide who will lead the
American nation through turbulent times ahead. He also decides
who will lead Israel, Iran, Iraq, and all the other nations of
the epicenter and the world. His will cannot be thwarted. Let
us, therefore, pray that His will would be done. Let us also
pray that we are faithful in blessing Israel and her neighbors
in the name of Jesus, as He has commanded us in the Scriptures.
http://flashtrafficblog.wordpress.com/
How would you like to take office with that series of problems
lining up like a scary set of hurricane generated breakers on
the horizon?
It would seem that there would be one of two motivations that
would lead a person to step into that breach.
Either a massive enough ego that would see these challenges as
an opportunity to write ones' name large upon the annals of
history.
Or a humble desire to face these challenges for the good of the
people one desires to serve.
Funny how those same motivations can easily characterize our
involvement in the work of God.
There are those who get into the ministry because they seek a
position of respect or prominence in the eyes of others.
As French writer and philosopher Albert Camus observed, "But now
too many climb onto the cross to be seen from a greater
distance, even if it means trampling somewhat on the One who has
been hanging there so long."
But there are also those who simply love the Lord and His people
and follow the old adage, "There is no limit to what can be
accomplished as long as no one cares who gets the credit."
As a man who knew a thing or two about serving the Lord, Simon
Peter, put it:
The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder
and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker
of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of
God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion
but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as
being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to
the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will
receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. (I Peter
5:1-4)
Here on election day I am certainly praying that whoever is
declared the winner will have that kind of humble, servants'
heart.
I am also praying that the Lord would raise up more and more I
Peter 5 leaders to build up His people in the challenging days
ahead.

Another Door Opens

Have you ever heard the old saying, "When God closes a door, He
opens a window."?
We are living that out here at the ministry of Scott Richards
Live.
As many of you are aware, last Friday was our final day of being
heard live in Albuquerque, Dallas and across the mid west on the
Horizon Broadcasting Network.
We will certainly miss the live connection we had with so many
of you through those great radio stations.
But we are equally excited about the new opportunities for
ministry that lie ahead.
There is no doubt in my mind that the change to being heard live
daily here in Arizona during the popular "drive time " hour of
5-6 pm will be exciting. In fact, we will also be live every
Friday in Honolulu at 2 pm on KLHT radio.
We will also be available live across the nation and around the
world at
www.Scottrichardslive.com.
It will be interesting to see how many of you that we have
gotten to know through our previous set up will continue to join
us by way of the internet.
As you can see on our welcome page there is a new toll free
number you can take advantage of where ever you are across the
country - 1-866-725-5467.
We are also looking at a new approach for making SRL available
on stations across the country. We are identifying and
contacting Christian radio stations that would be willing to air
the program on a tape delayed basis as part of their weekend,
evening or early morning schedule.
If you would like to help in this effort and have a Christian
radio station in your area, we would encourage you to personally
contact them and let them know about Scott Richards Live. You
can steer them to the web site for more information.
Please be in prayer as we launch out into this new chapter in
God's work through SRL! When the Lord is in charge there are
always exciting and unexpected things ahead!
‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who
has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and
shuts and no one opens”: “I know your works. See, I
have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for
you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not
denied My name. (Revelation 3:7-8)

Precision In Prayer

One of the most important principles the Lord has taught me over
the years is a variation on an old cliche.
When the going gets tough, the tough get praying.
I can't think of any place in the world where things could be
tougher than in the nation best selling author Joel Rosenberg
calls "the Epicenter" of God's work in this world -
Israel.
The Bible tells us specifically what His desire is for His
people when Israel is at risk from her enemies.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls,
Prosperity within your palaces.” (Psalm 122:6-7)
There are three specific prayer requests contained in this
passage, as well as a special promise for those who put this
call to intercede into action.
- Spiritually we are to pray that the Jewish people find and
love their true Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus).
- Security-wise we are to pray that the Lord would defend and
strengthen the nation against her foes.
- In leadership, that God would send wise shepherds to watch
over and prosper her people.
That certainly provides a good start in our role of providing a
prayer covering for the Lord's chosen people.
It also puts us in a great place personally, as God has promised
to
"bless those who bless"
Israel. (Genesis 12:1-3)
But if you want to get even more specific in your prayers, I'd
like to share with you some directions that will allow you to be
a part of God's prayer team on an even deeper level.
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to sit in on a
conference call with Joel Rosenberg concerning the work that God
is doing in Israel and the Middle East, and an update on the
practical impact being made by his relief organization "The
Joshua Fund".
As a follow up to that conversation, Joel has sent out the
following points for practical prayer in "the Epicenter":
- That the Lord would open the hearts of Israel to
their need for the Messiah. That their empty hearts would drive
them to search for true meaning.
- That there would be a wave of hunger across the nation to read
the Hebrew Scriptures personally - not just religiously.
- That the youth of the nation would begin to hunger and thirst
for righteousness.
- That the Lord would provide for the physical prtection of
Israel from those nations and enemy organization that choose to
attack and persecute her.
- That God would transform the hearts of Mahmoud Ahmadinejhad,
Honi Mubarak of Egypt, Bashar Assad of Syria and Sheik Nasrallah
of Hezbollah.
- That the Lord would continue to fulfill Ezekiel 37:21-23,
drawing Jewish people back to Israel - even those who don't
understand why they are compelled to go.
It has been said that we can do more than pray, but that we
can't do anything more until we pray.
Let's remember the first step toward changing this world is to
fall on our knees!
